Unless you or someone you know are suffering from the symptoms of thyroid disorders, you probably are not aware of what the thyroid gland does for your body. Located on both sides of the throat, the thyroid gland controls your metabolism, incuding overall energy levels, rate of growth and other functions we take for granted. Find good information on thyroid help here.
The hormone that your thyroid makes is called thyroxine. When not working properly, two conditions may effect your health. Hyperthyroidism and Hypothyroidism.
Hyperthyroid Symptoms And Causes
Hyperthyroidism occurs when the thyroid is overactive and producing to much thyroxine. Women are more likely candidates than men. The over production causes symptoms like:
An increase in anxiety
Unexplained weight loss
Rapid heartbeat
Heat intolerance
Constant fatigue
Unreasonable mood swings
Unusual sweating
Though the causes may mimic other disorders, a blood test and thyroid scan is usually all that is needed for a diagnosis. In some cases not all of the thyroid gland is overactive, and treatments can include radioactive iodine or anti-thyroid medications, and even a surgical procedure called a thyroidectomy to reduce the amount of thyoxine hormone produced. To help avoid surgery find treatment here.
In other cases a condition called Grave’s disease, which is caused by the immune system not functioning correctly, is the culprit. If you notice inflamed or protruding eyes you should see your doctor for treatment, it may be Grave’s disease.
Inflammation called thyroiditis, or unusual lumps on the throat, like the gland is swollen, can also be causes of hyperthyroidism.
Hypothyroidism Causes And Symptoms
If the thyroid gland is producing too little of the hormone thyroxine, hypothyroidism, also called Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, occurs. Some of the symptoms are the opposite of those experienced with hyperthyroidism, such as:
Cold sensitivity
Unexplained weight gain
Slow reflexes
Frequent constipation
Anemia
Goiter
Short attention span
Considered less serious, hypothyroidism causes can bea result of the treatments used to treat hyperthyroidism. Patients should therefore be screened on a regular basis for levels of T3, T4, and TSH hormones.
Since hypothyroidism responds well to the synthetic thyroxine hormone, which matches the natural hormone, the patient is easily diagnosed and treated by your doctor or Endocrinologist.
Family history can play a significant role in diagnosing symptoms of thyroid disorders, so be sure to inform your physician if any members of your family have been treated for either hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism.
Thyroid Function, Testing and RT3
Adrenal insufficiency. A deficiency in the adrenal hormone DHEA is a fef common underlying issue in thyroid disorders. If it is not corrected, patients may find that they are overly sensitive to thyroid replacement treatment.
Chinese Medicine and Thyroid Disorders
So, you see, Chinese Medicine treats thyroid disorders by bringing yin and yang back into balance. The hyperthyroid patient needs to be cooled down and nourished and the hypothyroid patient needs to be warmed up and stimulated.
Thyroid and Rheumatological Disorders
Arthritic symptoms frequently occur in patients with thyroid disorders, and thyroid antibodies often occur in systemic arthritic disorders. Several reasons are proposed.
Breast Cancer and thyroid disorders
On the TNBC boards, I’ve noticed many ladies have complained of thyroid disorders but I didn’t think much about it as thyroid disorders are so common, at least half of my friends have one and they seem to be cancer-free.
I started researching thyroid disorders and am amazed at what I’ve found. Long term hypothyroidism has nearly ALL the same symptoms as FMS. It is caused by and can lead to other deficiencies which can case fatigue, twitches, etc.
Iodine And Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis
While iodine may be a useful supplement for most hypothyroid patients, it is a dangerous option for those with Hashimoto’s disease.
Is it a serious thyroid problem if my voice changes a lot or I lose it, I have difficulty swallowing and it hurts, and I have pains in my neck?
